The Sinai Temple Social Action Committee and other local Jewish organizations coordinate a number of volunteer activities that reach beyond the walls of the synagogue. We encourage you to lend a hand by agreeing to volunteer with your fellow congregants for one or more of these worthwhile and fulfilling projects.
Listed here are brief descriptions of many of the volunteer opportunities and the days/dates/hours needed. For more information, contact the co-chairpersons of the Social Action Committee by calling the Temple.
CATHOLIC WORKER HOUSE
Sinai volunteers prepare dinner once a month at the shelter for homeless women and children.
CENTER FOR WOMEN IN TRANSITION
The Center houses homeless women and their children, and helps them return to normal lives. Volunteers run the shelter, and handle administrative/office work and calls for assistance.
On Christmas Eve and Christmas day, Sinai Temple volunteers answer phones and monitor house guests so staff can celebrate their holiday. Adults or families can help.
When: Three-hour shift: December 24, 4-10 p.m.; December 25, 8 a.m.- 10 p.m.; and other times during the year. A one-hour training period is required at the volunteer's convenience.

COUNCIL OF CONGREGATIONS
The Council of Congregations (COC) is an interfaith association of some twenty congregations acting cooperatively to serve human needs in Champaign-Urbana. Delegates come from various Protestant denominations, Catholic churches, Sinai Temple, the Baha'i community, and the Society of Friends.
For many years, COC volunteers have provided child care at Sinai Temple for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Temple members and others drive many individuals to
medical appointments. More drivers are needed.
Through donations from its members and supporting congregations, the COC maintains an Emergency Fund that meets calls for help from social workers at Family Service and from local hospitals. Typical requests are for help with power bills, rent, telephone installation, prescription drugs, and medical supplies. In addition, volunteers maintain two programs of community service: Hospital Support and Friendly Visiting and Support.
COVENANT HOSPITAL MEAL SERVICE
The meal service activity of B'nai B'rith at Provena-Covenant Hospital, in Urbana now consists of "manning" the Cafeteria line at lunch and dinner on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. Exceptions are when Christmas falls on Saturday or when Easter Sunday is a Yom Tov (the first two or the last two days of Passover). Each meal requires about two and three-quarters hours of a volunteer's time. Training is provided on the job
