ENDOWMENT FUNDS
Contributions to Sinai Temple Endowment Funds build long-term support for programs. Only the income earned from investment of contributions is used. All endowed funds are managed for Sinai Temple by the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Endowment Foundation (CUJEF). Write your check payable to CUJEF.
New endowments may be established, with board approval, with a principal of $10,000. Subsequent donations are added to the capital sum.
If you wish to donate to one of the following endowment funds, make your check payable to Sinai Temple. On the memo line of your check, write Endowment Donation: and the short name of the fund. Example: Endowment Donation: Cohen Fund. Mail the check to C-U Jewish Endowment Foundation, 503 E. John Street, Champaign IL 61820-5703.
- General Endowment Fund
Purpose: to provide general funds for Sinai Temple.
Income from this endowment augments the Temple General Fund. Individuals can make contributions to this fund with a minimum of double Chai ($36).
- Julius Cohen Memorial Garden Fund (Cohen Fund)
Purpose: to provide for garden maintenance and improvement.
The Julius Cohen Garden endowment provides income for the maintenance of the garden areas around Sinai Temple. Originally established to maintain the Cohen Garden, it now also supports upkeep of the Einhorn Garden area at the back of the Temple and the Neuman Garden area in the courtyard.
- Joli and Donald Ginsberg Library Endowment Fund (Ginsberg Fund)
Purpose: for purchase of books, periodicals, and other media appropriate for the Sinai Temple Library.
- Milton and Annette Glaser Fund (Glaser Fund)
Purpose: to support periodic concerts of Jewish music, usually in alternate years.
Milton and Annette Glaser served as members of the Sinai Temple Board of Trustees, and in 1979, Annette became the first woman elected president of the congregation. Annette endowed this fund in Milton's memory in 1985. The Glaser children requested that the fund be renamed the Milton and Annette Glaser Fund in 1991.

- Goldberg-Gordon-Yairi Fund for Seniors (Goldberg Fund)
Purpose: fund programs for local seniors who are homebound or who reside in nursing homes.
Ehud and Janie Yairi and family established this fund in memory of family members.
- Josh Gottheil Youth for Israel Fund (Gottheil Fund)
Purpose: to encourage travel to Israel by local Jewish youth.
Diane and Fred Gottheil established this fund in memory of their son, Josh.
- J. Ben Hamburg Early Childhood Education Fund (Hamburg Fund)
Purpose: to provide Jewish educational materials for children from kindergarten through grade three.
Ben Hamburg's daughters, Joyce Levy and Rethea Katz, and their families endowed this fund in Ben's memory.
- Sisterhood Myron Korry Confirmation Education Fund (Korry Fund)
Purpose: to provide financial support for a trip to Chicago for each year's Confirmation class.
During this trip, the students attend services at a variety of synagogues and usually visit the Spertus Museum collections of Jewish culture. Vera Korry established this fund in 1982 in memory of Myron and in recognition of his influence upon the lives of so many of our children.
- Lewis Family Fund
Purpose: to provide lectures, concerts, exhibits, or other programs of Judaic interest, and to provide full or partial scholarships to Jewish camps.
This fund is in honor of Arthur Lewis, who was confirmed at Sinai Temple, and served as president of the congregation in 1947-48.
- Clarence and Adele Libman Sinai Temple Religious School Fund (Libman Fund)
Purpose: to help educate Jewish children, both in religious school and at other institutions (including camps).
Funds are for the sole use of the Sinai Temple Religious School at the discretion of the Sinai Temple Board of Trustees with input from the Religious School Committee. William and Lisa Libman and Robert and Sondra Libman established this fund in honor of their mother, Adele, on her 85th birthday, and in memory of their late father, Clarence. Proceeds from this fund will help assure that quality education remains one of the best means of passing our heritage from one generation to another.

- Charles R. and Helen Loeb Fund (Loeb Fund)
Purpose: to help educate Jewish children, both in religious school and at other institutions (including camps).
The Loebs were among the founding families of Sinai Temple, and actively served as officers of the congregation. Helen established this fund during her second term as Sisterhood president.
- Jack and Sayde Marco Holocaust Fund (Marco Fund)
Purpose: to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and to make certain that the memory of those who died in the Holocaust will be perpetuated for future generations.
Sayde Marco established this fund to honor the memory of victims of the Holocaust. Proceeds of the fund will provide the opportunity for a community-wide Yom Ha-Shoah program at Sinai Temple. While the observance is planned to be held at Sinai Temple, participation of as many Jewish organizations as possible is encouraged and welcome.
- Libby and Harry Miller Memorial Fund (Miller Fund)
Purpose: provide funding for programs for area Jewish seniors.
Martha Gelfand established this fund in memory of her parents, Libby and Harry Miller.
- Rabbinic Endowment
Purpose: for support of Rabbinic salaries.
This fund was established in memory of Natalie Smith and Seymour Sudman.
- Michael and Elizabeth Shapiro Camp Scholarship Fund (Shapiro Fund)
Purpose: to assist local agencies in Champaign-Urbana in meeting their special program goals as well as providing assistance to Sinai Temple members who have particular needs; administered by the Social Action Committee.

- Sinai Temple Sisterhood Camp Scholarship Fund (Sisterhood Camp Fund)
Purpose: to provide partial tuition scholarships to camps sponsored by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
This fund continues the tradition of Sinai Temple Sisterhood to provide scholarships for children to attend UAHC summer camps. Recipients are limited to children of Sinai Temple members.
- Dr. Samuel and Sadie Small Fund for Jewish Arts and Culture (Small Fund)
Purpose: for programs of Jewish arts and culture.
- The Marvin Steinberg Scholar-in-Residence Fund (Steinberg Fund)
Purpose: to help perpetuate Judaism by bringing scholars from outside Champaign-Urbana in alternate years to lecture, conduct seminars and discussion groups, participate in Sinai services, and meet with members of the Jewish community.
Esther Steinberg and Elaine and Allen Avner established this fund in memory of Marvin, who served as president of the congregation in 1960-61.
- Blanche and Seymour Sudman Rabbi's Discretionary Fund (Sudman Fund)
Purpose: for providing regular income to the Sinai Temple Rabbi's Discretionary Fund.
- Sinai Temple Board Discretionary Fund
Purpose: to provide an opportunity for the Sinai Temple Board of Directors to fund special projects for which no funds have been budgeted.
This fund was created by Edward and Nancy Tepper, both of whom have served as Sinai Temple presidents.
- Youth Leadership Fund
Purpose: for attendance at youth leadership conferences by youth in the Champaign-Urbana Jewish community.
This fund was established by Stan and Joan Levy at the end of Stan's term as Sinai Temple president.
- Mathlia Zimmerman B'nai Israel Fund (Zimmerman Fund)
Purpose: to provide for lecturers and pulpit guests at Sinai Temple.
B'nai Israel served the needs of Champaign-Urbana's more traditional Jews until 1948, when the congregation disbanded. Mathlia Zimmerman, president of the Women's Auxiliary, was instrumental in contributing the balance of the fund to Israel and to Sinai Temple. Mathlia Zimmerman's daughter, Sayde Marco, and her granddaughter, Jewel Kurland, have both been active members of Sinai Temple.
