Sinai Temple GIFT-GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

Interior & Building Funds :: General Fund :: Special Purpose Funds

Endowment Funds :: Miscellaneous Fund-Raising

Many members of the congregation ask how they can support and contribute to the growing needs of Sinai Temple. Many seek to provide support for our Jewish community in honor of a life-cycle event such as a birth, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or wedding, or to honor the memory of a loved one or friend. Others contribute for no special reason at all except to be there and be counted. This section lists Sinai Temple's gift- and endowment-giving opportunities so you can see at a glance the wide range of Temple activities that receive financial support.

Donations of $15 or more in honor of or in memory of an individual or an event are acknowledged in the monthly Temple bulletin. Donations to the Temple General Fund are especially useful. General Fund donations are put to immediate use for current expenses. If you do not specify an application for your donation, it will be placed in the General Fund.

You can make a donation to a program or operating fund, which makes your donation immediately available for use by the Temple. Alternatively, you can make a donation to an endowment to provide long-term support of the Temple. Donations to endowments are invested. Only the income from these investments is used to meet the goals of the endowment. Endowed funds are managed by the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Endowment Foundation (CUJEF), with expenditures normally approved by Temple officers or committees.

WHAT IF I WANT TO DONATE IN THE FUTURE?

Many people have retirement funds (IRAs or pensions), life insurance policies and other financial accounts (stocks, checking accounts). With any of these, you may list Sinai Temple as a beneficiary. You should consult your employer or insurer about how to do it. It may be as simple as notifying them in writing of your desire that a certain monetary amount go to Sinai Temple.

Perhaps the most common way to plan for the future is through a will or a trust. Although you may create your own will or trust, consider consulting a legal or tax professional in order to determine which may be best in your particular financial circumstances. Even if you already have one prepared, it is simple to change it in order to list Sinai Temple as a beneficiary. More information is available as a 106 KB PDF file and can be obtained here.

If you see an area that is not currently covered by an endowment, and would like to establish a fund to support that area, please contact the Temple Endowment committee. If you provide a donation by check to a specific fund or program, please follow the instructions for the wording of your check exactly to ensure that it is accurately credited to the desired account.

If you wish to donate to several different funds, please write a separate check for each fund. Different funds may be managed by different treasurers, and be deposited in different bank accounts. The risk that your contribution will go to the wrong fund is highest when you contribute to more than one fund with a single check. Unless otherwise noted, please send donation checks to Sinai Temple, 3104 West Windsor Road, Champaign, IL. 61822-6104.

Currently, the Temple raises the majority of its income through annual dues that are augmented by special fund-raising events and a number of special contributions. By reviewing these giving opportunities, you can better decide which fund(s) meets your own goals. While Sinai needs endowment funds for long-term growth, no contribution is too small. The Sinai Temple board wants to be sure that everyone in the congregation has an opportunity to participate in the Temple's growth.

The major categories of opportunities are described below. Other opportunities for gift giving are available within our larger Jewish community, as well. The Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation (CUJF) has successfully coordinated annual fund-raising for Jewish causes both locally and internationally for many years.

INTERIOR & BUILDING FUNDS

Members are encouraged to provide financial gifts—large or small—to the Sinai Temple Interior Fund. Consider providing funding for the following areas: capital improvements; religious school; Jeanette and Leonard Davis Chapel; educational resource room; Educator's office; library; youth lounge; gift shop; landscaping; arts and acquisitions; women's and men's bathrooms; the kitchen; and signage.

You can also donate to the Building Fund to provide for permanent improvement and/or major maintenance of the physical plant. If you wish to donate to this fund, make your check payable to Sinai Temple. On the memo line of your check, write Donation: Building Fund.

GENERAL FUND

Donations to the Temple General Fund are especially useful. They are used to supplement dues income for general Temple operations and current expenses, and they provide money to any Board-approved need of the Temple. The money is immediately available in full.

If you do not specify an application for your donation, it will be placed in the General Fund. Make your check payable to Sinai Temple. On the memo line of your check, write Donation: General Fund. Mail your check to Sinai Temple, 3104 West Windsor Road, Champaign IL 61822-6104.
