COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS
- Audio / Visual:
The Audio-Visual Committee is responsible for the
public address system in the sanctuary; the public address system in the
Davis Chapel; the audio-visual carts and equipment used by the Temple and
the Religious School; arranging sound systems for special events such as
auctions and theatrical productions.
- Arts & Acquisitions/Interiors:
The Arts & Acquisitions/Interiors Committee is responsible for making recommendations
to the Sinai Temple Board of Trustees pertaining to the acquisition and/or commission of gifts,
art and furnishings; the acquisition and placement of all objects of art and
furnishings for the temple; reporting major art and furnishing acquisitions
to the Sinai Temple Board of Trustees; the operational management of the
Sinai Temple Museum Collection and the exhibits in all the museum cases
throughout the Temple.
- Buildings and Grounds:
The Building and Grounds committee has
general oversight for the temple building and grounds including all
mechanical equipment and structural components of the building, parking lot,
and the lawns, gardens and flower beds. Members of the committee work with
the Temple Administrator to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of
the HVAC system, lights, fire and security alarms, electronic door system
and general building maintenance.
- Condolence:
Following the passing of a community member or the
loved one of a community member, the Condolence Committee works together to
organize, set up, and clean up the meal of condolence and shiva gatherings.
While the committee is generally called on a handful of times during the
year, it is an invaluable service. Volunteering as a member of the
Condolence Committee is a meaningful way to give back at a time when support
and community are needed most.
- Data:
The data committee provides the software and backup to
track the myriad details of demographic and financial information related to
Sinai membership. Because Al Avner wrote (and continues to tweak) the code,
everything is personalized to Minhag Sinai.
- Finance:
The Finance Committee advises the Board on financial
issues. It acts as the Temple's budget committee and drafts the Temple's
annual budget for Board and Congregational approval. This committee may make
recommendations to the Board on any finance issue, including financial
policies, banking, investments and accounting procedures.
- Fund Raising:
The Fundraising Committee is dedicated to putting
the "FUN" into Fundraising. We host events to help raise critical funds for
the Temple; and, these events are often social in nature and bring together
the Temple family for fun and entertainment. Members of the Fundraising
Committee enjoy organizing and planning these events, and have formed
lasting friendships by working together to help benefit the Temple.
- Gift Shop:
Sinai Temple Gift Shop has the most extensive collection of
Judaica for sale in East Central Illinois. We are open during Religious
School, on Thursdays from 10-1, and by appointment. We also have an on line
store. All profits from the gift shop go to support the Sinai Temple
Religious School.
- Internet:
The Internet Committee is responsible for:establishing
and maintaining the Sinai Temple website; establishing and maintaining the
Sinai Temple Religious School website; arranging for Internet access for
Sinai Temples computer network. Sinai Temple's internet address is:
www.sinaitemplecu.org.
- Kitchen:
The goal of the Kitchen Committee is to keep the kitchen
organized and well stocked, oversee use of the appliances and inform
families about kitchen procedures. The Kitchen Chairperson is in charge of
buying the items needed for weekly onegs, Kiddush luncheons and special
events at local discount stores, and overseeing the professional kitchen
cleaning once every two weeks.
- Library:
Our library is a comfortable space to study or relax,
and explore Sinai Temple's wonderful collection of Jewish books and
resources. The library committee continually updates the collection with the
goal of best serving the Jewish informational needs of both children and
adults in our community.
- Membership:
The Membership Committee's goal is to welcome all
members of the Jewish community and help them feel comfortable and find
their place within the membership of Sinai Temple. The Committee was formed
to promote the values of Temple membership, and create a sense of community.
As new Jewish community members inquire about Sinai Temple, the Membership
Committee will guide them to their interest groups in the Synagogue.
- Memorial Plaques:
The Memorial Plaque Committee is responsible for
maintaining the Memorial Board located just outside the sanctuary; ordering
and mounting plaques on the Memorial Board.
- Music:
The mission of the music committee is to develop the
musical experience at Sinai Temple. By offering new, alternative and
traditional musical Shabbats and holiday services we hope to enhance a
spiritual experience, and more actively engage congregants in prayer and
celebration.
- Oneg Shabbat:
Hosting an Oneg for fellow congregants at Sinai
Temple is both a Mitzvah and a joyful responsibility of membership. Now the
concept of Oneg has been expanded to include the Oneg after the "Shabbat
Rocks" service and the Kiddush luncheon following the Egalitarian
Traditional Minyan, as well as the Oneg following the usual Friday night
service.
- Religious Education:
The Religious Education Committee oversees
the Religious School. It advises on education issues including policies and
procedures, staffing, curriculum, budget issues, etc. The committee
supports the Religious Educator in all areas related to the administration,
programming, and fundraising activities of the school.
- Shabbat Rocks:
Once a month, families with school-aged children share
dinner together before a kid-friendly Shabbat Service. The service contains
live music, a story for kids, and a chance for kids to experience a Shabbat
Service geared towards their pace. Afterwards, families can enjoy a Kiddush
and Oneg Shabbat.
- Shabbat Singers:
Do you love to sing? Are you looking for a way to share
your joy of music with others? If so, Shabbat Singers wants you! Under the
direction of Allison Fromm, the Shabbat Singers encourages and supports
congregational singing and provides a path for people to find their way to
Jewish spirituality through music and fellowship. We welcome adult singers
of all backgrounds and experience levels to join us and participate in
Shabbat and holiday services, as well as at Jewish community events.
- Social Events:
The goal of the Social Events Committee is to
strengthen the sense of community in the Temple by providing holiday dinners
, summer parties, cooking, dancing and other events of interest to
congregants. Small admission fees are charged to cover the cost of each
event as nearly as possible since this committee is self-sufficient.
Different Temple members or committees are asked and encouraged to assume
leadership of various events in order to disperse the workload.
- Youth Parent Advisory:
The Parent Committee was formed in order to develop a
Constitution for the Champaign-Urbana Temple Youth (CUTY) in the Fall of
2009. Once this was accomplished our role has been to oversee CUTY and be
available for consultation with the Education Director and the CUTY Advisor.
When needed, we also act as liaison between CUTY and the Temple Board.
