Sinai Temple CHAVUROT
Back to Special Interests
A Chavurah is a community fellowship that exemplifies the values of Judaism and extends Temple membership beyond the walls of the synagogue. Each Chavurah is structured as an egalitarian fellowship with each member having an equal voice. Each group is a distinctive expression of community, study, prayer, celebration, social action, Shabbat and holiday activities, and life-cycle observances.
The Chavurot of Sinai Temple consist of groups of Sinai Temple members who get together socially each month. Currently, Sinai Temple has six active Chavurot. Each group has approximately 14 members, and some have a purpose or theme. For example, one group includes couples of mixed marriages and their children. This Chavurah gets together monthly at each other's homes with a program that may include the children in their activities.
CHAVUROT PROGRAMS: Chavurah groups get together for such activities as potlucks, dining out, attending theater productions, and listening to guest speakers. They also attend Temple functions as a part of their programming activities.
Some successful programs have included the following:
- Hanukkah Potluck with a candle-lighting ceremony, followed by a gift exchange.
- Theater production at Krannert, followed by dessert.
- Dining out in new restaurants, followed by dessert at a home.
- Reviewing and discussing a new best-seller.
- Jewish Trivial Pursuitfun and enlightening.
- Volunteering several Sunday afternoons to beautify our Temple garden.
- Visiting the various Sukkahs built by some families in the Jewish community.
- Listening to our Rabbis discuss Chasidism, Kabbalah, Jewish life cycles, and various holidays.
- A Hanukkah potluck and Havdalah service attended by all the Chavurot, with entertainment provided by the children.
Providing food or refreshment of some kind is always very important. It can be a simple soup and salad, or it might be a special event. For example, a chavurah could arrange an evening of Sephardic dining prepared by the members of the Chavurah, followed by a member with a Sephardic background discussing his family origins and customs.
If you are interested in participating in a Chavurah, please contact the Sinai Temple office.
